NATIONAL PARK VISITOR CENTER
The National Park Visitor Center is Stone Group Architect’s submission to perform design/build services for the Department of the Interior and Forest Service. The project utilizes the government’s encouragement of Alternate Technical Concepts (ATCs) to inspire innovation and flexibility in the procurement process.
Our proposed design integrates sustainability and innovation, featuring a natural and environmentally conscious approach. By incorporating passive and active systems, the building is oriented to optimize solar heat gains seasonally, ensuring energy efficiency. The MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) systems play a crucial role in supporting the building’s sustainable features, utilizing geothermal systems and photovoltaics to further enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The design includes an educational space enriched with interpretive signage to inspire learning and engagement. Emphasizing durability and long-term value, the project uses vernacular materials and metal roofing for a welcoming and lasting public space. The structure seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings, reducing onsite disruption while featuring an elevated central area with distinctive trussing that enhances natural light and provides sweeping views. Our winning submission highlights low operational costs and a high return on investment, ensuring the design is both practical and sustainable for future generations.
