SD DEPT. OF GAME, FISH & PARKS OUTDOOR CAMPUS EAST ARCHERY EXPANSION – PHASE 1

Location - Sioux Falls, SD

Completion Date - Estimated 2025

Size - 23,000 SF

The outdoor archery range is a new addition to the Outdoor Campus East complex in Sioux Falls. Nestled amidst the open tallgrass to the southwest of the existing campus building, it seamlessly integrates with the natural landscape, providing an ideal setting for archery enthusiasts without the worry of their target running away.

Spanning over 60 yards towards Oxbow Ave., the range holds twelve shooting lanes that exhibit an array of target distances, which cater to various age groups and strength levels. The inner ten lanes are paved with crushed concrete, while the outer two are thoughtfully designed with ADA-accessible concrete lanes. Positioned within the covered shooting area are tables integrated into the timber structure, providing convenience for shooters, while behind them, spectators can comfortably observe the action unfold.

Dominating the north end of the shooting structure is a storage shed, reminiscent of the campus building, adorned with three subtle yet complementary colors: beige, green, and red. An interesting architectural alignment catches the eye — the roofs of the storage shed and covered shooting structure seem to harmonize, almost as if they were purposefully interconnected.

For those concerned about glare from the setting sun hindering their aim, fear not! A towering down-range baffle, rising approximately 20 feet tall, stands ready to shield against the sun’s harsh rays. Not only does this structure serve as a protective barrier, but it also kindly intercepts any stray arrows, lending a helping hand to those still honing their aiming skills.
