Gunnison County Veterans Memorial
The American Flag stands tall in the center of this memorial located in American Legion Memorial Park. At the base are two United States Marine Corps howitzers used during wartime. A granite marker was placed in the ground to honor Gunnison County POW/MIAs.
This memorial also honors the Veterans of Gunnison County Colorado who served in the Middle East War (Desert Storm). Their names and ranks are listed as a permanent tribute with the phrase: “Though our land be continually tried & hallowed, freedom does still ring. We are forever proud of you…”
A native of Gunnison, Sally Jacobsen was an American journalist and foreign correspondent. She was the first woman international editor of the Associated Press (AP). She coordinated and supervised the AP’s press on the 2001 War in Afghanistan and 2003 War in Iraq.
