Hartley, Iowa

|

Three granite monuments stand in the middle of this memorial. One with the Inscription:

Dedicated to the Men and Women of the Armed Forces
Past – Present – Future
Be it Times of Peace Or Times of War
Their Service and Sacrifice Established and Preserved
Our Freedoms of Democracy

A second pillar displays the military seals and a third monument honors 25 soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Sitting benches offer visitors a place to sit and pay respect. The memorial supporter’s graved bricks are displayed on a military wall.

This memorial was originally dedicated in 1891and displayed a 28-foot high, white monument. Names of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), companies and regiments were engraved in the monument. The pillar was destroyed in 1944 after a tornado toppled the nearby church steeple on it.

Hartley’s Veterans Memorial is located on Highway 18 at the entrance to the Hartley Funeral Home.
