JOHNSON COUNTY ARMORY & VETERANS MEMORIAL
The Johnson County memorial was built on site at Iowa City’s old Armory, where the original cornerstone from 1937 still stands.
In the center is a main pillar that displays all branches of service seals. Engraved brick pavers line the base of the memorial.
Dedicated on Veterans Day 2013, the community has continued to add additional features throughout the years. In 2014, an interactive kiosk was created which visitors can bring up biographies on all the Veterans honored there. The community won two awards in excellence and achievement from the kiosk. The historical information and Veterans’ biographies are also listed on the Johnson County website. Visitors can also find historical stories and photos inside the Armory.
Other additions over the years include a brick path that was added in 2018 using bricks formerly used at the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall and a raised platform holds engraved bricks of the area Veterans. In 2021, a tall, black granite memorial with names preserves the legacies of area Veterans.
