MACON COUNTY COURTHOUSE VETERANS MEMORIAL

This city’s county courthouse is one of very few buildings that was built in 1865 during the Civil War. It has been beautifully preserved and still stands strong today. Near the courthouse stand several memorials honoring all Veterans from Macon County who perished in the various wars and conflicts.

Closest to the courthouse is a monument that displays the phrase – “Freedom Will Never Be Free.” This monument, dedicated in 2007, honors and lists names of those that paid the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan and Iraq.

An eagle stands guard on one of the granite monuments in remembrance of those who died in France, in the United States or taken at sea in WWI. Another monument, dedicated in 1985, lists those that passed while serving in Korea and Vietnam.

As a message to all Americans is carved in stone, “May we so live that the principles for which they died shall not be forgotten.” This monument honors all Veterans who laid down their lives during WWII.
