THE COMMONS

This apartment complex consists of two apartment buildings (3-story / 57-unit and 4-story / 76-unit) and a community center. The design team worked with the client to create a blended aesthetic of traditional neighborhood tones with contemporary overtones. The biggest challenge was working with fixed layouts which situated the mechanical room outside of the building envelope. After several iterations, the design team decided to embrace this characteristic and elevate it on the elevations. The result was the vertical “towers” on the north and south sides of the building. This helped to create a sense of verticality on a very elongated building. The shed roof on the top of each tower helps to tie the traditional with the contemporary in the overall design.
